The City of Oshawa is one of 45 communities in Ontario selected to participate in a four year program designed to improve the health of children aged 12 years and under. Various community partners, including health, education, recreation and local business, will work together to implement community based programs and activities that focus on physical activity and healthy eating. The Boys and Girls Club of Durham is thrilled to be a part of this initiative. The City and its partners will utilize a $1.125 million provincial grant to promote healthy living for local children.
Get ready! Get set! Go!
Community Partners have been working on completing a Community Needs Assessment to identify needs, gaps, resources, opportunities and assets to support the challenge.
Based on assessment, partners will deliver local activities focused on one specific theme related to healthy eating or physical activity every nine months for the next three years.
The first theme announced by the Ministry focuses on physical activity: "Run. Jump. Play. Everyday." The theme ran from April 1, 2015 to March 31, 2016 and provided the opportunity for many great programs to run that got families up and moving. For the duration of this theme, the Boys and Girls Club of Durham was able to open our Friday Night Special Events and weekend programs to the public.
The second theme announced by the Ministry focuses on encouraging children to choose to drink water and limit how many sugar sweetened drinks that consume: "Water Does Wonders." This theme will run from July 1, 2016 to March 31, 2017.
From December 1, 2016 to January 7, 2017 the Healthy Kids Community Challenge is challenging families to "Take the Pledge!" Families could win one of many prizes by pledging to:
Prizes include a family bike package, passes from fun places like Sky Zone, Air Zone, Joey's World, Laser Quest and much more!
