Aquatics Director

Permanent, Full Time
$47,000-$52,000 / year

MAIN FUNCTION

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Aquatics Director is responsible for all elements of the Aquatics portfolio. This role is responsible for the scheduling of all aquatics staff, swimming lessons, and other aquatic programs. While working in a busy pool environment, the Aquatics Director will work with the Executive Director and Finance Director to ensure a sustainable budget is created, implemented and adhered to. This position will also oversea the Health & Safety policies of the organization, ensuring that all policies are current, relevant, and that all staff are in compliance from a health and safety perspective. The Aquatics Director will also ensure that all staff are trained in Standard First Aid and CPR-C and update staff files accordingly. The Aquatics Director is a member of the Senior Leadership Team and is expected to embrace the mission, vision, and core values of the Club.

Executive Director

DUTIES

  1. Responsible for all Aquatic programs, operations, and administration
  2. Responsible for Aquatic program registration, scheduling, and promotion
  3. Recruitment, training and evaluation of all Aquatic staff and Aquatic volunteers
  4. On-Deck supervisor for all Aquatic lessons when required
  5. Provide instruction in swimming skills, water safety and aerobics, when required
  6. Available to lifeguard during program times, as needed
  7. Organize the delivery of Standard First Aid Training, including CPR-C training, for all staff throughout the year (This may also include facilitation of the training)
  8. Assess First Aid training dates of all staff to ensure certification is current
  9. Assess and co-ordinate pool maintenance with facility maintenance staff, including daily pool tests required by the Department of Health
  10. Maintain a safe workplace, ensuring all health and safety practices are in place in accordance with the Ontario Health and Safety Act and the Public Health Act
  11. Administer all Aquatics and Health & Safety policies and procedures
  12. Prepare and support a variety of correspondence, data, and statistics
  13. Regular reporting of statistics and trends as they relate to the Aquatic portfolio
  14. Liaise with other community partners to actively promote the BGC Durham Aquatic programs
  15. Regularly research and explore innovative Aquatic opportunities
  16. Administer all agency policies as they relate to the Aquatics portfolio
  17. Work with other departments in the organization to co-ordinate programs and new ideas to ensure maximum focus of the organization’s mission

QUALIFICATIONS

  • College or University graduate of Recreation or related program
  • Valid Lifesaving Society’s Instructors Certificate, National Lifeguard, and Standard First Aid – CPR-C
  • Bronze Cross Examiner
  • Preferred Water Safety Instructor Trainer and National Lifeguard Instructor and Examiner
  • Minimum 3 years experience in pool facility supervision and teaching with the Red Cross and Lifesaving Society’s standards
  • Knowledge of pool operations and filtration systems (preferred)
  • High Five and Quest certification (or willing to obtain)
  • Strong leadership and teamwork skills
  • Working knowledge CRM systems

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • 37.5 hours per week – Monday to Friday with some evenings and weekends required
  • Frequently required to work with tight timelines
  • Required to be in the pool to work with staff and program participants

Northview Unit Program Assistant

Permanent
$20.21 / hour

MAIN FUNCTION

To assist the Director of Children and Youth Recreation Programs with day-to-day operation of the After-School Program, Summer Camp, and special and evening programming. Exhibit sound judgment and fairness, good leadership, organization, planning skills and be familiar with the After-School, Summer Camp and Children and Youth policies and procedures.

Northview Unit Director of Children and Youth Recreation Programs

DUTIES

  1. Ensure all staff follow daily program plans.
  2. Express a caring attitude when working with children.
  3. Prevent accidents through the enforcement of policies, rules and regulations of the Club.
  4. Administer first aid to the best of one’s certification and ability.
  5. Be physically fit and alert to meet any emergency situation at any time.
  6. Maintain order in and about the facility’s environment.
  7. Assist with maintenance duties when required.
  8. Always maintain acceptable appearance of both uniform and personal hygiene.
  9. Act as a positive role model and first point of contact/supervision for the Northview Unit staff, students, Club members, and their families.
  10. Be knowledgeable and proficient with High Five standards.
  11. Ensure that supplies and equipment are adequate, safe, in good repair, and make sure all areas are cleaned up after the program.
  12. Give direction in and assist with program planning and maintain schedules of the After-School Program, Summer Camp, evening programs and special events.
  13. Participate in all staff trainings and meetings.
  14. Report any accidents/incidents involving staff to Director and write out a report.
  15. Perform all other duties deemed necessary by the Program Director and/or Executive Director.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Monday to Friday (scheduled between 10am-9pm – according to program needs)
  • 35 hours per week at $20.21/hour, permanent 
  • Working with Program Director, groups, co-workers, students, and independent work
  • Occasional modification of hours due to special events and programming
  • May include some weekends
  • Must be able to work together with other Unit Assistants, Coordinators and Directors

EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience in a related field
  • Must be flexible, organized, and able to problem solve
  • Experience in a BGC Club environment is an asset
  • Understanding of child development
  • Current criminal reference check
  • Standard First Aid/CPR-C
  • High Five Certification – minimum PHCD. QUEST would be an asset
  • G driver’s license with clean abstract
  • Minimum 18 years of age

Swimming Instructor and Lifeguard

MAIN FUNCTION

To instruct a quality swimming program and to keep clients safe in an aquatic environment following the Standards set out by Canadian Red Cross, Lifesaving Society, and BGC Durham. To prevent accidents, promote education and leadership amongst Aquatic and Club clients and provide first aid/rescue skills when necessary. Exhibit sound judgement and fairness, good leadership/organizational/ planning skills and be familiar with the aquatic policies and procedure manual.

REPORTS TO

Aquatics Director & Instructional/Guard Supervisor

DUTIES

  1. Express a caring attitude when working with children.
  2. Have a solid knowledge of all strokes and skills for all levels of the Red Cross Swim Preschool Program and Swim Kids Program.
  3. Prepare lesson plans for every aquatic class.
  4. Prepare mid-session and final aquatic progress reports according to policy.
  5. Keep up to date on Red Cross Water Safety standards.
  6. Prevent accidents through the enforcement of policies, rules, and regulations of the Club.
  7. Administer first aid skills to the best of one’s certification and ability.
  8. Be physically fit and alert to meet any emergency situation at any time.
  9. Maintain order in and about the facility’s environment.
  10. Assist with maintenance duties when required.
  11. Maintain acceptable appearance of both uniform and personal hygiene at all times.
  12. Act as a positive role model for the clients.
  13. Be knowledgeable and proficient with all swimming standards.
  14. Screen swimmers during the first lesson.
  15. Ensure that supplies and equipment are adequate, safe, in good repair, and that you clean up your own equipment and assist other staff if necessary.
  16. Maintain current qualifications.
  17. Attend all staff trainings and meetings.
  18. Perform all other duties deemed necessary by the Aquatic Director and/or Executive Director.
  19. Follow and practice all health and safety rules in accordance with the Ontario health and Safety Act and the Public Health Act.
  20. Report any accidents/incidents involving staff to Director and write out a report.
  21. Perform all other duties deemed necessary by the Aquatic Director and Executive Director.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Working with swim participants – physical manipulation, safety, instructing
  • Required to lift pool equipment – set up and clean-up of lessons
  • Evening and weekend shifts
  • Ability to work in a pool environment

  • Minimum 16 years of age

  • Have experience working with children
